The Green Energy Cooperative was established in 2013 as part of the project “Development of Energy Cooperatives in Croatia” implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Croatia. Upon completion of the project, ZEZ has continued to operate independently.
Today, ZEZ is a umbrella organization that fosters development of energy cooperatives in Croatia and the region through providing various support from the idea to execution stage. ZEZ is an active member of Rescoop.eu, the European federation of energy cooperatives and Terra Hub, a spin-off association from UNDP Croatia. ZEZ is one of the co-founders and co-funder of the energy sector at the Cooperative for Ethical Financing (ZEF). Also, as members of the Energy Community, we coordinate the work of a technical group to engage citizens in the development of renewable energy sources.
The ZEZ mission is to help citizens in the development, investment and use of renewable energy sources. Our goal is to achieve real changes in the development of energy and the involvement of citizens in the process of energy transition. We want to make sure that citizens participate in planning, deciding, building and producing energy and participating in the division of profits. Through our activities, we encourage the development of social entrepreneurship in the energy sector. Our work has an effect on the equality of society and the preservation of the environment. We develop concrete and sustainable solutions that enhance the development of local communities.
What makes us different from the rest? Our experts have the experience of developing projects that develop new, innovative economic models of using renewable energy sources. Our models are tailored to the needs and problems of local communities because of our inclusive development process. Our approach is based on experience and professional work in the field of energy in Croatia, the countries of the Western Balkans and the countries of Central Asia, which we have acquired as part of the energy, environment and innovation team at the Office of the United Nations Development Program in Croatia and through its activities in other renowned organizations.
Our members are multidisciplinary experts, activists and practitioners with years of experience. Part of the members are employed in the co-operative, and some of the members are primarily active in other organizations, but remain an active part of our co-operative think-tank.
